News for 2nd June 2010 :: Work Based Apprentice Mentoring
Would these employees be able to commit to a two day training programme on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th June 2010 in order to be trained as mentors?
Aimhigher in partnership with the Herts Chamber of Commerce and the University of Hertfordshire is looking for organisations to participate in an Aimhigher funded Work Based Mentoring programme.
We are looking for employers who are keen to take part in testing out the benefits of running a 6-9 month mentoring scheme for young employees in their workplace. Each employer will nominate up to 5 employees who fit the Mentor profile and criteria. These selected employees will attend the 2 day Mentor Training Workshop at the University of Hertfordshire. Once trained they will be matched up with a mentee (apprentice) within their own organisation and work with them for a period of at least 6-9 months.
The aim of the pilot is to encourage apprentices who have potential to develop within the workplace and their learning but are lacking in confidence or who have issues which appear to be preventing them from progressing. These employees will have no formal higher education qualifications but will have the ability to progress their learning and skills to a higher level.
What will mentors get out of it?
Taking part will not only bring a sense of achievement and satisfaction in encouraging others to take an interest in their learning but it will also develop their own organizational, communication, problem solving and leadership skills.
It will also give them the opportunity of participating in the mentor training programme, acquiring new skills and networking with others in a similar role.
Programme criteria
- A Mentor Trainer from the University of Hertfordshire will discuss the programme with a nominated Mentoring Coordinator within the organisation and advise on the mentor/matching process.
- The participating organisations will agree to release up to 5 appropriately selected volunteer Mentors for 2 days consecutive training on Thursday 10th & Friday 11th June 2010
- With the support of the Mentor Trainer and the “Mentee Criteria Profile” the Mentoring Coordinator will match individual volunteer Mentees to each of the trained Mentors.
- A Mentor Trainer will visit the organisation and conduct Mentee induction sessions with the selected Mentees prior to the first mentoring session. The Mentee will be given a Logbook to record their sessions and actions required.
- The participating organisation will facilitate meetings between the Mentor/ Mentee by allowing them to meet fortnightly for up to an hour in a private space.
- A Mentor Trainer will provide at least 3 Support Workshops for the Mentors at the University over the course of the 9 month programme. These will be a forum in which to share experiences with other mentors and to discuss any particular areas of concern.
- The participants in the programme will be required to take part in evaluating the mentoring process. This will require a pre and post questionnaire to be filled in by all participants as well as a Feedback Form from the Senior Manager/Mentoring Coordinator responsible for the programme.
- All Mentors will be provided with Mentoring Handbook and a Mentoring Toolkit.
What do mentors have to do to take part?
Firstly they would need to be able to commit to the two day training programme, to
6 -9 months of fortnightly mentoring meetings and the 3 X 2 hr support workshops.
They will need to check the Mentor Criteria (to see if they are eligible for the scheme) and complete the application form.
The completed application form should be returned to the Mentoring Coordinator by the 7th June 2010. Please return forms to:
