News for 28th April 2010 :: HOW JOHN LEWIS HELPED WATFORD TO BECOME GREENER

Over 30 local companies have already expressed an interest in becoming involved in the Sustainable Transport Strategy which is being rolled out in Watford by the Chamber of Commerce. Part of the scheme involves the purchase of 100 robust bicycles over the next 18 months which will be loaned out free of charge to the companies involved.

The decision has now been taken by the Board of One Watford to purchase the Ridgeback Nova from John Lewis in Watford and you should soon see the first bicycles on the streets of our town.

A launch event is planned for June when the first bicycles will be handed over to the staff of Clydesdale Bank.

Work has now been completed on the Watford Commuter pack the towns network green travel plan which encourages local businesses and their employees to consider the use of alternative and sustainable transport modes in relation to commuting and business travel by establishing walking, cycling, the use of public transport, car sharing as realistic alternatives to single occupancy car use for every day commuting.

The pack also outlines the health benefits of walking and cycling with full details of the Watford Commuter bike loan scheme and how local companies can become involved together with details of interest free loans to assist members of staff to purchase additional bikes.

Work is currently in progress on new cycle and walking maps of Watford and a new web site will be up and running shortly which will include information on cycling and walking, tubes and trains together with details of discounted fares that are available together with tips on how to keep fit and healthy.
